"Thoughtcrime" in every day life

One organization I go against would be society. Society today demands a certain way of life and Unspoken rules. If you do not follow these unspoken rules and follow this lifestyle you will not fit in with the majority and are therefore outcased by the masses. Dressing a certain way, looking a certain way, acting a certain way, talking a certain way, and even thinking a certain way is deemed unacceptable in our society. This is clever. though it is not outwardly expressed as being the rules of society but its what we are led to believe is okay. So we actually enforce these unspoken rules among ourselves. The oppression comes from those around us who believe what they are told without question or reason. It is not seen as bullying to those who are suppose to protect us because they are the ones who raise the youth to believe these things. You cannot be yourself in our society without judgement if it goes against what we are taught. I openly go against society but others are less open about it. They fight it from the inside by playing along but they don't truly feel its right.

Examples of "Doublethink" in daily life

"I'm hungry, but not really, I want to eat but then again I don't."

"I love winter but I hate the cold."

"I hate sweets but I eat them anyways."

"I don't want to get up but I want to hangout with friends."

Activity 7

Based on what I have read from the first page and what I have found looking through the book I believe the world Winston lives in is very oppressive and quite dull. He doesn't seem to be happy in this place, I feel as if we will find out he is living under a totalitarian government where every aspect of life is controlled. It seems like Winston doesn't like living in this world and he doesn't see the world as others in the novel do and this is what sets him apart from the rest. Most likely it is the reason the author chose to set the story from his point of view.

Important Elemements of Content

"It was a noise that set one's teeth on edge and bristled the hair at the back of one's neck. The hate had started" -(11)

-this is important because it signifies, what the society calls Hate Week, has begun. As well as establishes a bad tone by starting it off with a horrid noise that tells readers this week can intale nothing good.

"DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER" -(18)

-In the first two paragraphs the main character stumbles upon a poster that reads "Big Brother is watching you." So this could mean he could be fighting whatever oppression he is under. Or this could mean he is going to fight it.

"The instant she caught his eye she looked away again" -(61)

-Now this could mean anything from she was nervous to she found Winston attractive but this definitely feels as if its leading to something more and leans more towards finding him attractive.

I predict the society of 1984, by the first two paragraphs of the novel, is very oppressed. I believe this to be true because it is set in a very grim place. The wind is strong and it is very cold outside, and when the main character steps inside what seems to be an office, and the elevators are not running to preserve energy for something called Hate Week. When he proceeds to take the stairs he sees a poster that reads "Big brother is watching you" with a face with eyes that seem to follow you. There could possibly be an oppressive government or something of that nature.

-there is an afterword at the end by Erich Fromm and I think you should read it to give some extra insight on the book. it should be read before you begin your reading. It's divided by titles.

Utopia- a perfect, happy society in which all of humanities problems have been solved

Anti-utopia or Dystopia- a nightmare society in which life is as difficult and unhappy as it could be: often the result of trying to create a utopia

The United States is a democracy, but its somewhere inbetween utopia and anti-utopia because we have freedoms as well as rights but the government has the power to infringe those freedoms and rights. Leading us to believe we have the privacy we were entitled to by our forefathers, while they go through your personal items such as email and text messages.                 

Orwellian would not happen in the United States, because it would infringe our rights as American citizens. 

If I was put in this situation I would drop electronics completely and do everything by secret letters and face to face communications. My concerns of privacy would rise and I would be more of a recluse. I'd keep to myself unless something needed to be said.

I would not answer the door if FBI agents knocked on my door. I would feel as if I am being watched. I'd keep an eye out for undercover cars and agents everywhere I went. Fear would not overwhelm me but rather keep me alert, ready. My life would be altered in the way I do things. Obviously you can't fully recede from a life of digital communication without arousing suspicion so rather you lead those who might try to follow you away from your true thoughts or feelings. I would have to come up with a way to put an end to it. I believe I would be a radical in this situation.

This situation is Orwellian because it is the secret gathering of information that is to remain private through non-consensual methods.

Orwellian, what is privacy?

Orwellian means, to me, non-consensual supervision of private property by the federal government.

I believe this to be an accurate definition, because in 1984 they have a government that rules over all
while in the United States we have a government run by the people, supposedly for the people. Yet they continue to spy on their people gathering intel on each and every one of us. Just as the invasive government of 1984 does to it's citizens.
